Can a single man adopt in Indiana?

The voluntary act of adoption is a selfless act that gives a child a chance at a different life. If you are a single man who wants to adopt, you may be uncertain about your chances of being approved. The Indiana Department of Child Services offers all the details for parents hoping to adopt.

The law recognizes that your gender does not affect your ability to parent, and that men are perfectly capable of being adoptive parents in Indiana. However, you must meet other guidelines. First, you must pass a fingerprint check from the Federal Bureau of Investigation to verify that you do not have a criminal history, and you will also need to undergo a home visit to demonstrate that you have adequate space in your house for another person. Training requirements will also need to be fulfilled before you are approved.

While there is no income guideline for adoptive parents, you will need to prove that you are financially capable of taking care of a child. You do not have to have other biological or adoptive children already in order to be approved for adoption.

If you are planning to adopt a child who has a mental, emotional or physical disability, or another medical condition, he or she is considered a special needs child. Any sibling group or single adoption that has at least one member over the age of two is also labeled as special needs. In some cases, you can be given medical insurance or financial assistance from the government for your special needs child. This information is intended to educate single men on their ability to adopt in Indiana and should not be taken as legal advice.
