Can you help your grandchildren despite your child’s divorce

by | Nov 3, 2018 | Grandparents' Rights

When divorce is brought up, your immediate thoughts may turn to the separating couple and their children and all of the challenges they face in their changing future. However, divorce can have a genuine effect on you as a grandparent, as well as the relationship you are able to maintain with each of your grandchildren in Indiana.

Because your child is getting divorced, it may be difficult to ignore the temptation to take his or her side and to believe everything negative that is said about his or her former spouse. However, behaving in this manner will only hurt the relationship you can have with your grandchildren.

According to LiveAbout, it is not unusual or wrong for you to pursue professional counseling or therapy in helping you to overcome the emotions you may be facing in regards to your child’s divorce. Your concerns about whether or not you will be able to continue seeing your grandchildren regularly are justified. However, you can certainly give yourself the best chance at continuing to be a part of your grandchildren’s life by maintaining a neutral opinion about the separation and making active efforts to stay in contact with each grandchild.

You may also consider providing support to your child and your grandchildren by offering to help with transportation or babysitting if it is needed. This kind of action will allow you to be supportive as well as provide you the opportunity to see your grandchildren despite the changes in their parents’ relationship.
